Export documentation should be offered, not requested
A genuine exporter has a phytosanitary certificate and a certificate of origin ready for every shipment — these aren't optional extras, they're what clears customs on your end. If a supplier treats these as an afterthought you have to chase down after the container has already shipped, that's a sign their export process isn't set up properly, whatever their prices look like.
Cold-chain handling over a multi-week route
Piarom and Mariami are both soft, moisture-rich dates, and the Iran-to-Malaysia route isn't quick. Ask specifically how the shipment is temperature-controlled in transit, not just at origin — a date that leaves Bandar Abbas in good condition can still arrive soft or fermented if the container wasn't kept cold the whole way. A supplier who can describe their actual shipping line and container type has done this before; one who gives a vague answer probably hasn't shipped much of it.
FOB versus CIF, and who carries the risk
Understand which Incoterm you're actually buying under. FOB (free on board) usually costs less upfront but puts shipping, insurance, and the risk of transit damage on you as the buyer. CIF (cost, insurance, freight) costs more but the exporter carries that risk until the goods reach your port. Neither is automatically the better deal — it depends on whether you have your own freight forwarder and import experience, or would rather pay a bit more and let the exporter manage it.
Container minimums versus smaller trial shipments
A full container load is the standard export unit, but it's a large first commitment if you haven't worked with a particular exporter before. Ask whether they'll do a smaller LCL (less-than-container-load) trial shipment first. It costs more per kilogram, but it lets you check quality and reliability on a real shipment before committing to a full container on your next order.
Payment terms that protect both sides
International trade usually runs on a deposit plus balance-on-shipping-documents arrangement, or a letter of credit for larger orders. Be wary of an exporter who insists on full payment upfront with no documentation trail — a reliable one is comfortable with terms that give you some protection if the shipment doesn't match what was agreed.
